Need some fashion inspiration for the Melbourne Cup that’s stylish and affordable?
Whether you live in Melbourne or anywhere else in Australia, many of us celebrate the race that stops a nation in different ways every year. Sometimes it’s casual at a BBQ with friends, or it can be an organised lunch event, or a day at the track.
This post takes a fresh approach to Melbourne Cup fashion – as we don’t all have the opportunity to attend the actual event in Melbourne, but there are other options for celebrating on the day and to dress for the occasion.
Melbourne Cup falls on the first Tuesday of November every year so it’s warmer spring weather that you are dressing for (ironically though, Melbourne’s weather has a life of its own so you normally need a plan B and/or plan C to get through the Spring Carnival in the host city!).
Keeping it casual
If it’s a casual BBQ with friends for Cup Day, dress to stay cool and comfortable. We have three suggestions – all are simple and easy to wear – like this Toby Heart Ginger ribbed knit dress ($49). You can add heels or flats with a chunky necklace and it’s the perfect casual look.
Or team this cute Madison Square pleated crop ($49) with a great white skirt by Tanee Clothing ($49). The third option pictured is a flowy paisley maxi skirt by Freez ($45), matched with a white essential – a OOTD boob tube ($19). Just keep it simple and add your individual style with shoes and jewellery.
Race day lunch event
Bold colours, strong prints and stripes are all on-trend this season, so use your imagination and style up! This Love Indie nautical look blazer (on sale for $30) and shorts ($39) look gorgeous teamed with a beautiful stylish hat. Or you can make an impact with this black and white zigzag print dress by Tanee Clothing ($55) – just add black accessories and you are good to go.
Melbourne Cup at the races
If you are planning a day at the races, your Melbourne Cup outfit can be classic and neutral; you may prefer something colourful and fun; or you can add your own twist with some frilly detailing. This stunning Tiger Mist bloom print dress ($69) makes a knock-out statement for race day. Pretty lace is a classic and always a winner, like this Madison Square white lace dress ($49). And if your look is a little on the edgy side, this Love Indie tassel skirt ($55) is a great look you can dress up with heels and your favourite accessories.
The other must-have to complete your Melbourne Cup outfit at the track is headwear. Whether you choose a hat, fascinator, or headpiece, our advice is keep it simple – neutral colours work well with most looks (but if you have the confidence to wear something big and bold, today is the day to show off your one-off millinery creation!). Just ensure that the look works for you and choose headwear that complements your entire outfit and accessories.
If you are attending any of the feature racing days in Melbourne during this year’s Spring Carnival, read the detailed guide on Melbourne Cup Fashion tips by Kate Waterhouse for some great advice on what to wear (and not to wear) during any of the race days of the Carnival including Derby Day, Oaks Day, Stakes Day, as well as Cup Day.
Dressing up for Melbourne Cup Day does not have to break your budget. Each of the clothing items featured in this post are priced between $19 to $69 and are available from the Modella Clothing online store.
Hope we have inspired some Melbourne Cup oufit ideas for you this year. Happy shopping and however you are celebrating, enjoy Melbourne Cup day!
